Vrata means a law, pledge, obedience, or practice which is followed in Hinduism from time immemorial. It is a ritual of uniting our spiritual, mental, and moral discipline. A Vratham is a way to self-transformation and a path of self-discipline. Vrata is embedded in the Vedic notion of ‘rta’ or ‘rita’, which means direction and consistent discipline. “Vr,” means will, law, strength, and ‘rta’, means a rule. We have always been a witness to different kinds of Vratas devotees have had practiced for years, diligently and mindfully. One of such Vratas is Satyanarayan Vratham.

About the Sathyanarayana Vratham

Lord Satyanarayana is the avatar of Lord Vishnu, worshipped by devotees on full moon days. The Sathyanarayan Pooja is about expressing appreciation and our gratitude to Lord Vishnu for endowing us with all generous success in personal as well as professional life and blessing us all with good health and good life.

Satyanarayan vratham is done to worship and pay our respects to Lord Vishnu, a part of the great Hindu trinities. “Satyanarayan” is made of two parts wherein ‘Satya’ stands for truth, ‘Narayan’ stands for the highest and absolute form of being or the ultimate man; Simply assuring us that Lord Vishnu is the embodiment of Truth.

The Pooja has been a ritual for many ages; the Skanda Purana tells us about the same. Once, Narada, the messenger of the Gods, pleaded to Lord Vishnu to teach him the mantra or the secret to eliminating the suffering of all the people. To this important yet challenging question, Lord Vishnu said that respecting and paying obeisance to Lord Satyanarayan will be the supreme way of earning prosperity and Moksha (peace) in the Kaliyuga.

How is the Satyanarayana Vratham Performed?

The Satyanarayan vratham is a simple ritual that can be performed by anyone.

All one has to start with is a picture of Lord Satyanarayana, read the story of the vratham with devotion, and offer him fruits and flowers. It is performed in our homes as it creates a very positive environment in the house. All friends, families, and neighbors are invited to partake of the prasadam and feel the serenity of the ritual.

The Satyanarayana vratham can be done on any day, but performing the pooja during full moon days is considered more auspicious. The pooja also involves sharing the stories of Lord Vishnu, the act of Aarti, with chanting of mantras and ending with prasad for everyone.

Benefits of performing the Satyanarayana Vratham

Apart from the spiritual, mental, and physical benefits of performing the Satyanarayana Vratham, there are several holistic benefits such as,

There are two truths to performing Satyanarayan Pooja – External and Internal.

The internal truth of the Satyanarayan Vratham is that the application of truth in life, every single day brings prosperity, security, and safety from any calamity that may befall you.
